The Gael's had originally been called the "Saints", but changed their name in the late 1920's. The Gael's football team were heavy underdogs when they played teams like USC and CAL in the 1920's, but pulled off major upsets against both of them. They really burst onto the national scene in 1930, by traveling east to play and defeat the Fordham University Rams and the vaunted "Seven Blocks of Granite." Today, the school no longer fields a football team, but has gained some recognition on a national level in basketball. Current Portland Trailblazer rookie Patty Mills starred for the Gael's, and is one of the first indigenous Australians to play in the NBA. The St. Mary's mascot is a 10 ft. tall Knight dubbed "Gael Force 1."
