Once referred to as the Blue and Grey Warriors in 1912, the team went through a few different names (Normals, Teachers, Tutors) before they finally adopted Tigers as the official nickname in 1939. There have been three real live tiger mascots since 1972 all named Tom (I, II, III), which stands for TIGERS OF MEMPHIS. FUN FACT: Internee "Penny" Hardaway had to sit out the 1990-91 basketball season due to bad grades. He rose to the challenge and wound up making the Deans list with a 3.4 GPA. Hardaway had a very successful NBA career and is well known for having his likeness made into a puppet, in a series of wildly popular NIKE commercials. Hardaway recently donated 1 million dollars to his Alma mater.
