Men's 2-Hit Short Sleeve Tee When it comes to the history of Cigars, inevitably Cuba becomes the focal point, and the cigar band is no different. In the early 19th century, when it was apparent Cuba was the cigar capital of the world, this is when the use of the cigar band came into play. In the early days, cigars were packed in wooden boxes or barrels with the company named inscribed on them. As with fake Gucci Bags and bootleg CD's of today, European cheats would simply inscribe their inferior product with Cuban markings and sell them as the real deal. In the 1830's Gustave Bock, who owned a factory in Cuba, was credited with the first band - a simple wrapper with his signature on it. The practice spread from Cuba to other countries and as technology improved, so did the overall elaborate detail in design, color, and foiling of the bands and labels. Not only did the bands put an end to knockoffs, it helped to advertise the Cigar companies much more effectively and set them apart from each other. Many of the bands were produced by highly-regarded commercial artists. The bands often featured famous figures of the day, sports figures, historical figures, patriotic images, nature scenes, and bands for special events from trade shows to county fairs. Cigar Band collecting became popular at this time as well and remains a somewhat popular hobby today.
