The Cougars won the Football National Championship in 1984 behind quarterback Robbie Bosco. BYU has often been called "Quarterback U" due to the string of outstanding QB's to lead the Cougars to 27 conference championships including Steve Young, Jim McMahon, Marc Wilson, Gifford Nielson. The lone Heisman Trophy winning QB was Ty Detmer who set an NCAA record with over 5,000 passing yards in 1990. The team mascot is Cosmo the Cougar.
